The post-Christmas food round-up

January 1, 2012

Like for most people, post-Christmas Day here was all about the cold meats and pickles, here with mash and sprouts, but it gets a bit dull after a while, therefore it gets to be a joy to eat something that is neither chicken nor ham.

So, for a change, on New Year’s Eve we had a burger and fries, not just any old burger but one from the Heston for Waitrose range, and very nice it was too.

The burger itself has a good texture and tastes meaty enough and has enough fatty content to not dry out. I may well buy them again.

We jazzed it up with a slice of cheese, some home-made tomato, shallot and pickled jalapeño salsa, a grilled field mushroom, iceberg lettuce and some Amora orange burger sauce, plus home-made fries.

New Year’s Day and we got up late, so it was brunch rather than breakfast. For me this was scrambled eggs and smoked salmon on toasted muffins, plus a splash of chilli sauce and a fried field mushroom.

I know that scrambled eggs are supposed to be served baveuse, but I prefer them a bit more solid, so I cook them for a minute longer.
