A very sad death. Alex Chilton was one of rock’s perennial outsiders, one of the people who never really got the kudos and fame they deserved and one of those whose reputation grew in the years when he was away from the public gaze. Rather like Nick Drake, his influence is often cited by the hip and happening musicians of recent years and, also similar to Nick Drake, his output rests on a slender body of work.
Shooting to fame as the teenage singer of The Box Tops, his best work was on the first two Big Star albums, the second one, Radio City, being my personal favourite.
