So, a hot Saturday here in Bristol and it was time to start really getting the Summery dishes on the table.
No real cooking tonight, just simple, tasty favourites.
First up, sweet, perfumed orange-fleshed melon with Parma ham. Such a gorgeous thing to eat and a perennial favourite.
Next, griddled rare sirloin steak with a mixed salad and vinaigrette, served with some golden fried potatoes. Lovely well-hung steak, with crisp potatoes and a contrast from the sharp vinaigrette and crisp leaves.
Finally, to finish, Eton Mess; ripe strawberries, cream, broken up meringues and a raspberry coulis. A lovely finish to a simple meal that just satisfied on every level.
The wine for this meal was claret, Château Labat 2006, a Cru Bourgeois AOC Haut-Médoc. This was a lovely wine, well structured classic Bordeaux red, with tannins and acidity to balance the fruit. It is starting to mature nicely but has enough quality to continue to age and improve for another 3-5 years. We drank a bottle of this at Christmas and it is still a wine with lots of potential and I think I’ll keep the remaining bottles for a while longer before opening any more.
