Chez Jenny

Paris has many classic Alsatian Brasseries, Lipp, Flo, Bofinger etc, but Chez Jenny at 39 Boulevard du Temple is possibly one of the less well known ones among British visitors to the city. It is, however, an absolute gem, serving some of the best authentic brasserie food in Paris.

Founded by Robert Jenny in 1932, the restaurant is beautiful inside, with original 1930s wood panelling by Charles Spindler and traditionally dressed waiters. Like all the classic brasseries, the place is huge and well lit, bustling and with bags of atmosphere.

The menu is exactly what you would expect; oysters and other seafood, flammenkuche, quiches and soupe à l’oignon gratinée to start, choucroute garnie, various steaks, sole meunière, suprême de volaille au riesling, andouillette grillée or the plat du jour for mains and desserts like crème brûlée, mousse au chocolat, tarte alsacienne or profiteroles to finish.

All the food is superbly cooked and served and the experience of eating here is really very pleasurable.

The wine list is pretty much as expected too, with Alsatian wines featuring strongly in both pichet and bottle and the digestifs include plenty of Alsatian eaux de vie.
